As leaders, we’re confronted nearly every day with situations in which we must choose to lie, to be honest, or to be honest without being fully transparent—to stop just shy of a truth that might foster growth and change. My colleague, peer, or subordinate asks for an assessment and I must choose between a kind and merely honest response or a more transparent one that isolates areas for improvement or sheds light on a blind spot. I enter a meeting with the Board to update them on the business and have to choose, again, between honesty and transparency. Do I share with them what they want to hear, or do I share with them what’s really going on? That I’m nervous about the economy, scared that our new initiative might fail, worried because there’s a new competitor gaining market share? If I were truly transparent, I would let them “see inside” my mind and hear what’s really going through it. My transparency is optional. But the difference it might make to the Board’s decisions and the future of the organization is critical.
Transparency is closely tied to vulnerability. Some people are just naturally more transparent than others. They’re more grounded and more confident with who they are, and just don’t see transparency as a risk. The win is that teams are motivated by transparent people because those leaders can be trusted. Everyone has the ability to be more transparent, but it requires accepting that personal risk. You have to put yourself out there.
These values, and the behaviors that manifest from them, may not be forceful or flashy or showy. They may not produce “charisma” in the popular sense of the word. But they will certainly produce more personally mature individuals, more authentic leaders, and more high-trust organizations for now and the future.
